What's new
Updates.
I keep this page current so you always know what's changed in Wordy Bunch, without digging through an App Store changelog to find out.
Everything here is already on your phone. Updates from before August are folded into one short list at the bottom, since that stretch is long and most of it was small polish rather than anything worth its own section. If something in here doesn't match what you're seeing, or you want to flag a bug, I'm in the Discord and on Reddit.
21 September.
The latest update. It arrives by itself the next time you open the game, so there's nothing to download.
- The Forever Board has a second way to play, Overtime. You start with 90 seconds and every new word adds time, more for longer words, up to 12 minutes. Your best score is kept automatically and it has its own leaderboard, under the Forever chip.
- The leaderboard on the results screen now shows each player's card background, the same as the main leaderboards do. That covers the Forever Board and the Daily. Titles were already there, the backgrounds were not.
- The Daily results leaderboard is shorter. You get the top 25, and if you finished lower than that, your own row follows with the four players above you and the four below. The full top 100 is still on the Leaderboards screen.
- Sharing a card could freeze the game for a few seconds, and on a long Forever Board run it could close the app. The card was being drawn in a very expensive way. It's drawn a cheaper way now and looks almost the same.
20 September.
It arrived by itself, so there was nothing to download.
- Now and then a menu screen could go blank and leave only the Home button at the top. It happened most on the leaderboards, right after switching boards. That's fixed.
- The Forever Board now ends on the same results screen as the Daily, with your avatar at the top and your words listed with their points. The leaderboard there opens on your own position, five players above you and five below.
- Long press any word on that screen for its definition. It worked everywhere else and I had missed it here.
- Saving a Forever run that scores lower than the one you already have on the board now asks you first, so a good score can't be replaced by a stray tap.
- "Saved" only appears once the server has your score. If you're offline it says so, and the score follows when you're back.
- There's a Play again button once you've saved or dismissed a run.
- The Forever Board has its own share card. It shows how long your best word was and never the word itself. The board never changes, so one shared word would spoil it for everybody.
- While you play the Forever Board you get the Daily's timer and score header, and the screen stays awake for the full 120 seconds. Time checks and word results are spoken for anyone using a screen reader.
- Three new hidden badges, each with a title, for finding a 10, 11 or 12 letter word. They count in every mode, the Forever Board included. I'll leave the names for you to find.
- On iPad the Forever Board and its results are sized and centred the way the Daily is.
- You can leave the matchmaking screen while you wait for a ranked game. A bar at the top of the app keeps searching wherever you go, and when it finds someone you get a short window to accept.
- Ranked play runs in evening windows: 7 to 10pm UK time, 7 to 10pm in Sydney, and 8 to 11pm US Eastern. When it's closed the game tells you when it opens next, in your own time.
- Leaderboard avatars that loaded late used to stay blank. They show up now, and your own card's avatar moves again.
- An empty leaderboard now says why it's empty. The Daily board is bare for a while after it resets at midnight UTC, and it used to tell you to go and play a ranked match.
- After a multiplayer round the chat button is on every results tab and the tab labels are no longer cut short. The ready up button is also much harder to miss when the room is waiting on you.
3.0.0.
- The Forever Board: one board that never changes, so you can see how much better you have got on letters you already know. It carries its own music, and the menu points you to it until you have played it.
- Safety tools, all in one place on any player's card: block, and report a name. Both take effect the moment you tap them, and the two now sit together on a small badge so they stay visible on any card background.
- Chat stays curated. Wordy Bunch has never had free typing in chat, only phrases I wrote, and now the servers enforce that as well as the app does, along with the name attached to each message.
- Names are checked twice, on your phone and again on the server, so an offensive name cannot be saved even by a modified copy of the game.
- Terms of Use with a plain no-tolerance rule, agreed once before you claim a name.
- Fixed avatars on the leaderboard drawing in the wrong place when the weekly crowns panel appeared.
2.2.0.
- New app icons that match Apple's and Android's own native icon style instead of a custom image.
- Settings and other menus now open using each phone's own native sheet, so they feel like part of the operating system rather than a screen bolted onto the game.
- The drag trail and the avatar effects render through a faster graphics path, for smoother motion on more phones.
- Tiles now flash a ring and a colour bar the instant you submit a word, so you can see right or wrong at a glance.
- A further round of Android stability work, aimed at the freezes some players were seeing.
- The Android app is smaller to download.
September 2026.
- Fixed several bugs that only showed up at large accessibility text sizes: the board could get pushed off the bottom of the screen, replay letters could overflow their tiles, and a paid Helping Hand could become unusable.
- Every mode now types your word into the same box, so Ranked, Daily and Campaign all feel consistent as you move between them.
- Fixed a cause of freezes and crashes on some Android phones.
- Raised the friends list cap from 15 to 20.
August 2026.
- Added 22 titles to unlock and equip, each paired with its own badge.
- Leagues got season cards: award pills, a paged history feed, and a race line, so you can see the shape of your season, not just the final table.
- Sprite avatars now animate on the Leaderboard and in the Shop, not only inside a match.
- Progress you've earned in Campaign can never be taken back, even when something behind the scenes needs fixing.
- Fixed a bug where the sound engine could go silent on some devices.
- The board now flashes colour across every tile as you submit a word, showing right and wrong at a glance. It took two follow-up fixes to get that animation steady everywhere.
- Multiplayer rounds can now be voted to skip the replay once everyone in the room has already seen it.
- The first run now flows straight from the tutorial into your first real Daily board, on one continuous screen instead of separate steps.
Since launch.
- Wordy Bunch launched on iOS and Android on 20 July 2026, with the iMessage word duel alongside it.
- Fixed an in-app purchase bug and shipped a batch of first-week polish.
- Added the onboarding funnel and friend-invite links, so it's easier to get a friend into a match.
- Added a friends Daily leaderboard.
- Most fixes can now reach you without waiting for a full App Store or Play Store update.
